Grant for Marquee Tent - Update
We were lucky enough this year to have been awarded a grant which enabled us to purchase a Gala event marquee for our Scout Group. As a Group we have grown and therefore have more young members who wish to enjoy the fun of camping and being outdoors. Living in Devon, as you may know, the weather is often wet and windy which can be challenging for camping. Trying to keep everyone dry, cook and still have fun is a big factor to a happy camp. Having a new marquee for our camps means we have space for our young members to eat their meals and carry out other activities if the weather is not dry.
We have had out new tent now for 6 weeks and it has already been used twice.
The first outing of our new marquee was to the Ten Tors event in May, providing a valuable space for the team members to sit and plan their route the evening before the event, check their kit, eat their meals and for the support team to wait during the challenge itself. The Team completed their 35 mile challenge in record time for our Torridge Explorers group and the team members received their Bronze medal for completing the event.
The second outing was over the second weekend of June, for our annual Cub camp, which was held at Skern Lodge in Appledore. This weekend presented weather warnings, rain and wind! Despite this camp went ahead. Cubs arrived and all of their kit was stored in the new marquee whilst we sorted their own tents etc. They spent the evening in the new tent making craft activities, as the weather was not suitable for going outside. The Cubs were oblivious to the weather and their sleeping tents held fast. The sun shone for us on the Saturday and everyone had a fantastic time with kayaking, high ropes and crate stacking. The new tent provided a fantastic space for mealtimes, enabling us to have proper tables and benches and on the Sunday when the weather came back in we were able to once again store all the Cubs kit and keep it dry.
We are so grateful to have been awarded a grant from Torrington Town and Lands Charity, enabling us to purchase the valuable resource. We have 2 more camps planned
